# Assemblies Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/assemblies-library Use assemblies to define often-repeated groups of items and attach them to equipment, or place them manually on the takeoff canvas. ## Create an assembly There are a few ways to create an assembly. 1. **The Assembly database.** Navigate to `Assemblies` in the left sidebar to see the Assemblies database. Click the `Create` button. 2. \*\*The takeoff view. \*\*When selecting equipment or distribution items in the inspector, you will see an `Attached Assemblies` cell. In this cell you can click to attach an existing assembly to this specific takeoff object, or create a new one to attach. [Read more here](https://canaveral.ai/integrations/harrison) ### **More updates** * New Takeoff objects: Louvers, RTUs, electric heaters, air curtains, valves * Ductboard takeoff now supported * Double Wall duct takeoff metadata now supported * Automatic Part Database ID incrementation * Assembly component sync with instances existing projects when an Assembly definition is updated * New takeoff report blocks: "All items" and System blocks ### **Revisions** We sent an email about the new Revisions feature already, so we won't go too much into detail. Now available for all users: upload revision plans and AI finds the differences between the old and new versions. [Read more about Revisions here](https://docs.canaveral.ai/revisions). ### **Overlays** With the new Revisions feature comes the ability to visually overlay a sheet over another sheet. Set overlay settings in the Layers button in the top right of the Takeoff canvas. You can overlay previous versions over revisions to see differences, or overlay any page from the current set over any other page—useful for seeing architectural pages overlayed for mechanical, for example. ### **Cooper AI Agentic mode** In addition to answering questions in natural language, Cooper can now perform takeoff actions for you. Ask Cooper to update metadata if you made a mistake, or quickly change material over a wide swath of takeoff objects if you want to do some quick value engineering. Cooper will continue to evolve into more of an action-taker in addition to a search engine. ### **SMACNA Standards Optimize Mode** We've reworked our standards lock feature for ductwork takeoff to include three modes, **Optimize, Validate,** and Off\*\*.\*\* **Optimize** is a new mode that will correct your ductwork metadata such that your takeoff is always locked to the lightest gauge possible for your current dimension, material, and shape metadata, applying SMACNA standards for reinforcement. **Validate** is the previous setting, which will correct your takeoff metadata to be within SMACNA guidelines in general without weight optimization. Off will not apply any metadata corrections. See the new Standards mode selector in the header of the inspector bar when using the Draw tool in Takeoff. ### Spec Book Upload Upload your spec book PDFs in the project page for easy access and reference throughout the entirety of the project lifecycle. Click or drag and drop a pdf into the Specs slot on the project page in the new **Plans, Specs, & Reports** section. Once uploaded, navigate to the takeoff view and click the files icon in the top right. Click your spec pdf file under **Specifications** to open a side-by-side reference, allowing you to browse your specs while doing your takeoff (See below). Additionally, **Cooper AI** has knowledge of your uploaded spec book, and can answer any questions you have about the document in natural language. ### Project File Storage In addition to the spec book, **you can now store any file related to your project in Canaveral.** Drag and drop files or click the **Add files** tile in the Files section of your project page. Add images, excel files, pdfs, word documents, and any other common files you want to keep tabs on during your project lifecycle. ### **More changes** * Added condenser takeoff object * Added ability to create manual symbols in addition to existing AI-detected symbols. * Added Pipe Shields metadata and part resolution * Added Turning Vane metadata and part resolution * performance pass (framerate of large plans with 100+ pages is greatly improved) ### Resume button Want to pick up right where you left off when you sign in to Canaveral for the day? Now you can! We've added a simple "Resume" button to the top of the Dashboard sidebar to get you back to your last-opened takeoff project immediately. ### Sheet metal material pricing breakout by coil vs flat sheet We've updated the Sheet metal material pricing tables with separate columns for coil and flat sheet pricing definitions to help your estimates be even more accurate, better reflecting your real-world fabrication pricing. You'll see updated drill-downs by shape & coil vs flat, in addition to the existing material and metal gauge. Check it out on the **Materials** page. ### Labor hours breakout by coil vs flat sheet Similarly, we've added a special **Fabrication** tab in the **Labor** page to allow for specific per-hour productivity estimates for fabricated sheet metal, if your situation requires it. Fabrication labor columns can be added in your ductwork-related report blocks at export-time. ### System picker shortcut (W key) In draw mode, hold the **W Key** for a quick drag-and-release radial system picker experience, **no clicks or typing required**. We've pre-loaded Supply, Return, and Exhaust when using the duct tool, and similarly frequently used Piping systems when using the Pipe tool. We'll always try to find new ways to save you as many seconds as possible. ### Improvements to Cooper, your AI assistant Cooper has received numerous improvements. He can now answer natural language questions about your takeoff data. Ask for specific weights, linear footage calculations, or any other data, in natural language. We're working on some agentic features for Cooper that will expand his capabilities even further, so stay tuned. We've improved the usefulness and accuracy of Piping insulation by adding a new price table matrix that allows you to define specific pricing for various combinations of pipe size and insulation thickness by the linear foot. Pipe insulation has a new tab in the **Materials** page. ### Improvements to Cooper, your AI assistant Cooper has received numerous improvements. He can now answer natural language questions about your takeoff data. Ask for specific weights, linear footage calculations, or any other data, in natural language. We're working on some agentic features for Cooper that will expand his capabilities even further, so stay tuned. ### Cooper, your AI estimating assistant We've been hard at work building an AI assistant into Canaveral. Introducing **Cooper,** a chat interface where you can get questions answered about your plan, your takeoff, or even general industry knowledge from the internet. Cooper lives in your Takeoff page in the bottom right of the plan canvas. As always with Canaveral, your data is safe and secure, and we do not use your data to train any AI models. ### Zone tool We've added the **Zone tool.** Draw "Zones" on your sheets, give them a name, and takeoff objects automatically get assigned to the "Zone" based on position. Use the Zone tool to define phases, or areas, or any other kind of demarcation that fits your estimating needs. When generating a report, create a **Filter section** that filters by zones, to run Zone-specific report pages or tables.

Takeoff objects can belong to multiple Zones that overlap. When you move an object out of a zone, or delete or edit a zone itself, Zone assignments are automatically calculated and updated in the background.
### Better Specs system We heard your feedback about our Specs feature, and now they are much more flexible. Before, you could only define a single combination of spec target conditions—for example, a single "Pipe Chilled Water Supply" spec. Now, we've enabled you to create as many spec definitions targeting any metadata you'd like. To enable this, you can now select a single spec at a time in the Inspector header pictured below. ### Suggested Report Blocks When first opening the Export Takeoff panel, we now present suggested report blocks based on the takeoff objects you've drawn in your project. Easily click to add suggested report blocks for faster export setup. ### SymbolSight Improvements We've trained a new SymbolSight model that better detects VAV boxes. We've also improved symbol text matching to make it more reliable. Finally, we've added an overview panel to SymbolSight so you can view a list of all the predictions, can click through them at will, as well as an optional "Approve All" button that lets you apply all predictions as takeoff objects at once. Try it out and let us know what you think. ### Dark mode Burning the midnight oil doesn't have to hurt your eyes. We've added dark mode that persists on your local machine. Toggle between default and dark mode in the user dropdown in the top right (click on the user avatar circle). ### More changes * Reversed labor definitions for more parity with the real world, now you can define "lbs per hour" instead of "hours per pount" for duct install labor definitions, per example * Add assembly attachment field to SymbolSight panel, allowing you to attach assemblies to symboled items upon approval. * Symbol suggestions now appear in QuickDraw (hold Q near symbol text in your plans). For you folks that prefer manual takeoff of symbols, this will help you out! ### Text tool Place text notes inside your takeoff view visible to everyone in your org. Resize, customize backgrounds and borders. To use, look for the new "Text tool" button in the top toolbar of the takeoff view (Icon is a capital `T`). ### Improved upload speeds Project upload speeds have been drastically improved. We've refactored our upload mechanism to defer less-important processing work until *after* you've already navigated to the takeoff view, reducing the time you spend waiting during an upload, and helping you get right to takeoff. ### New Distribution shortcut Along the bottom of the canvas in the takeoff view, you'll see a new `D` key shortcut for a quick-switch shortcut to takeoff distribution items (Diffusers, grilles). ### More changes * fixed issue where SymbolSight predictions failed to process for some plans * allows deletion of projects from the Projects page (with speedbump confirmation of course) ### **Project-specific unit system overrides** Thanks to some of our Canadian pilots, we were alerted to the need for flexibility regarding unit system on a per-project basis. You can now set a project unit system that deviates from your org defaults. 1. When creating a new project, scroll down and expand the "optional fields" section to set an override 2. For already-created projects, you can change the unit system in the takeoff view in the ellipsis menu next to the project name 3. You can also change the unit system on the project information page inside the "project unit system" cell in the "info" grid. ### **Reporting updates (Pages and Filtered table data)** New report organization tools have landed for your immediate use. * A new **add page** button in the "Create report" modal lets you add new pages to your report. In a PDF export, a "page" will be an actual separate PDF "page". In an Excel export, a "page" will be a new "tab" (called "sheet" in Excel). Use this to organize your report content in separate pages as you see fit. * A new **filter zone** tool in the "Create report" modal lets you a special block that filters all other tables inside of it based on a given rule. For example, you can add a "sheet" filter zone that will filter down all items in a ductwork table to a specific sheet on your takeoff. You can add a "group" or "system" filter zone that will similarly filter items. Use this to segment your reports by different groupings for more targeted report sections. ### **Takeoff previews in project thumbnails** As your number of projects grow, we added a feature that shows a real screenshot representation of your takeoff in the project thumbnails on the "Projects" page. See actual colors and takeoff geometry in the screenshot from wherever the last user left off, giving you better visual context about the takeoff contents of the project. ### **Assembly attachments** Previously, we only allowed Assemblies to be placed as their own individual objects on your sheets. We updated the Assemblies feature with the ability to be "attached" to an equipment or distribution item, and inferred in your takeoff based on that attachment. For example, instead of having a diffuser assembly that needed to contain an actual diffuser takeoff object, you can now simply create a generic diffuser assembly with only supplemental parts that you attach to a diffuser object via the inspector box. There is a new "Attached assembly" cell in the inspector bar for this purpose. We're working on adding a simple way to attach assemblies during SymbolSight workflow for even faster takeoff. ### **More changes** * fixed issue with missing delete key handling on windows keyboards * allow shift-click on canvas for multi-selecting takeoff objects * fixed issue where oval transitions were appearing as a thin line in the takeoff view * fixed issue where lengths for flex ducts were being calculated from start and end point instead of drawn path * add re-ordering support for custom project fields ### **Eccentric Transition support** We've added a few improvements to the user experience of taking off transitions. During takeoff, when we detect you are transitioning from one dimension to another, you now activate a "transition" draw mode. This mode brings with it a few new features: * we now render the dotted "guide lines" of the shape as a trapezoid in the real shape of the transition to scale. * we added a new "alignment" metadata that allows you to define the "flat side" of an eccentric transition. * you can automatically switch between left/right alignment for horizontally offset eccentric transitions at draw-time by moving your mouse slightly offset from the previous centerline when taking off a transition. ### **Custom Project Fields** Custom fields for projects are now live. In addition to the Canaveral defaults, you can now add org-level custom fields for capturing unique data on all of your Canaveral projects. Choose from any of the following field types: * text * number * Canaveral user * date * single select * multi select * URL ### **Slash dimensions in QuickDraw** We've improved detection of dimensions with a slash when using QuickDraw (e.g. "30/20"). We've observed some plans where slashes denote oval dimensions, while others denote rectangular dimensions. To mitigate this ambiguity, we will present both the oval & rectangular dimension predictions in QuickDraw for selection when a "slash" dimension is detected. ### **Editable elbow radii** Previously, updating the elbow radius of an already-placed item would update the elbow piece itself but would not re-align the connecting duct/pipe pieces along with it. We've fixed that. Now, when you update the elbow radius of an existing item, we will automatically adjust the lengths of the connecting items to match the expected connection points based off of the elbows new geometry. ### Other fixes and changes: * Fixed issue with Piping report tables where resolved Parts from the Parts database did not appear * Fixed Auto-branch feature when taking off pipe (defaults to tees) * Fixed issue where project page sorting by "last updated" was not working correctly * Fixed issue where user had to hit "Q" twice for quickdraw items to appear * Add new icon illustrations for Pipe-related objects * Added duct-hanger-related implicit items to reports ### **Resizable Panels** You can now increase & decrease the height of various panels in the Takeoff view, specifically the Inspector, Symbols, and Takeoff panels. Adjustments will be saved on a per-project basis and will persist on your local machine ### **"Library" renamed to Database, Price Book now available in main dashboard sidebar.** We received feedback that "Library" was too vague of a term, so we renamed this page to "Database", which better describes the Parts & Assemblies data it houses. This will also be the home of an upcoming "Custom Objects" feature where users will be able to define custom objects for placement in takeoff and assembly definitions. "Database" will be your one-stop shop for all takeoff-object-data-related configuration in Canaveral. ### **End with Cap feature added to QuickDraw** When placing a run of duct while using the draw tool, holding `Q` for QuickDraw will now surface an "End with Cap" selection that, upon clicking, automatically inserts a duct end cap takeoff object in the position of your cursor when you first hit the `Q` trigger shortcut. ### **Duct Reinforcement Tie Rods Standards** Our standards correction engine now recognizes and updates Tie rod related metadata when conditions are met. Driven by SMACNA standards, certain dimensions & gauges may trigger Joint Tie Rod and Center Tie Rod metadata values. ### Other fixes and updates: * Added shift + click for multi-selecting objects in the object sidebar section * Added search to Parts Database tab * Fixed issue with tie rod items missing in reports * Fixed issue where auto-scaling was not working for some uploads * Fixed issue where pipes were not respecting material grouping in reports * Fixed issue where vertical stacks were overcounting duct totals in reports ## Added support for Linear Slot Diffusers Linear Slot Diffusers now selectable in the type selector in the Inspector. SymbolSight will now attempt to detect Linear Slot Diffusers ## User preference for Panning You can now choose between middle mouse click and right mouse click for panning on the takeoff page. Change setting at `User Settings > Controls` ## Bug Fixes * Fixed issue with Google Address autocomplete being locked to US regions only * Fixed issue that allowed projects to be created with no takeoff pages selected * Fixed issue that double-counted duct lengths in vertical stacks during takeoff report. * Fixed issue where vertical stacks appeared with 0 width after placement # Create a Project Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/create-a-project Creating a project has two parts: 1. Creating the project record (name, type, status, due date, address, etc.) 2. Uploading a source PDF and choosing which pages will be available in Takeoff ## Open the New Project page 1. Go to **Projects** from the main dashboard. 2. Click the **Create new button**. 3. You will arrive on the **New Project** form. ## Configure project data Before the Create button is enabled, complete these required fields: * **Name**: The project display name. * **Type**: `Commercial`, `Residential`, `Industrial`, `Institutional`, or `Other`. * **PDF file**: A valid PDF upload. You can also set: * **Address** (with automatic city/state/zip/country extraction when available) * **Due date** * **Status** * **Company** * **Optional contact fields**: contact name, phone, email * **Custom fields:** any custom fields that might exist on your Canaveral organization settings ## Upload your source PDF Use the upload area to click-and-select or drag-and-drop your file. ### PDF limits and validation Current enforced limits in this flow are: * **File type must be PDF** (`application/pdf`). * **The file must be a valid, processable PDF** (pages must be readable for preview generation). * **Only selected pages are added to this project's takeoff subset**. ## Select pages to include in Takeoff After upload, the app pre-processes the PDF and shows page cards. 1. In **Choose pages for Takeoff**, select individual pages, or use **Select all**. 2. For each selected page, confirm the page type: * **Plan** * **Reference** Only selected pages are sent into the created document and takeoff workflow. ## Automatic page-type detection (Plan vs Reference) When you select a page, the app automatically attempts classification: * Pages enter a queue (`queued`) and then classification (`classifying...`). * Classification runs in small batches to keep the UI responsive. * If classification succeeds, the page type is filled automatically. * If classification does not complete (for example timeout/error), you can manually choose the type in the dropdown. Important behavior: * Auto-detection is an assist, not a lock. You can always override a page's type manually. * Classification starts when a page is selected for inclusion. Classifying a page as a plan vs reference affects the kinds of AI models Canaveral runs on the page. Plan pages will be processed by our proprietary computer vision models to attempt to find takeoff object predictions. Reference pages will be processed by our text & table detection models to attempt to extract schedules, specs, and other kind of reference information.  ## Create the project and navigate to it 1. Select **Create project**. 2. The app uploads the source PDF, builds a subset PDF from selected pages, and creates project/document records. 3. You are redirected to the new takeoff workspace at: * `/takeoff/{documentId}` To view project-level details and edit metadata later, open: * **Projects** list, then select your project * Project details route: * `/projects/{projectId}` # Glossary Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/glossary In the Canaveral product or during communications with our team, you'll read and hear various terms related to the entities in our product ### Dashboard The Dashboard is where you first arrive in Canaveral when you sign in. See an overview of your Projects, settings, Files, and Library. The Organization encompasses all of your companies projects, users, settings, price books, and Parts Library. ### User Refers to your own single user account, with your personal settings, name, and avatar. Organizations have multiple users attached to them. ### Project An individual "Job" or "Project" you are bidding on. Projects can be created and viewed in the Dashboard Project page. Click on a project to see more information about the Project, including status, address, contact information, files, and more. ### File Files references any digital asset related to your Project. This encompasses both the full uploaded project PDF, as well as the Takeoff-specific pages PDF that we generate for you automatically on project upload. It also references any exported Report files associated with a project. ### Report Reports are any exported Takeoff report you generate. We currently support CSV, Excel, and PDF export types. Generate custom reports from the Takeoff view using the Create Report button in the bottom left of the sidebar. This allows you to draw on your project sheets to create takeoff objects, make use of our AI features, and inspect takeoff object metadata. Access the takeoff view of a project by clicking on a Project in the Projects page, then clicking on the green `Takeoff` button. You will also be automatically routed to the Takeoff View upon creating a project Screenshot 2026 02 22 At 3 56 54 PM ### Takeoff Object Takeoff Objects are the actual items you are counting, measuring, and editing in your Takeoff View. Things like Ducts, Pipes, Equipment, Fittings, etc. Takeoff objects have their own specific metadata editable in the Inspector. ### **Inspector** The Inspector is the section along the bottom of the Takeoff View that lets you set all kinds of metadata related to your Takeoff Objects. Screenshot 2026 02 22 At 3 52 57 PM ### Part A Part is an item in your Part Library, found at `Dashboard > Library > Parts` . A Part is used to resolve generic takeoff objects in your Takeoff view to a specific Part in your library, allowing you to drive accurate estimates from your takeoff that links to real-world items and costs. [Read more about Parts here](/parts-library). ### Assembly Assemblies are groups of Takeoff objects that you can define into reusable bundles. If a specific group of takeoff objects keeps occuring into your plan, convert it into an assembly for faster takeoff. [Read more about Assemblies here](/assemblies-library). ### Page/Sheet A page/sheet is a single shee from your uploaded plan PDFs. It can get a name and description (auto-detected by Canaveral to start). Sheets can be assigned a type at upload, either `Plan` or `Reference` . Only `Plan` pages are eligible for SymbolSight and Quickdraw AI features. ### Symbol Name for Symbols (otherside know as "tags" or "designations") from schedule tables in your plan. Canaveral automatically detects symbols from various tables related to Mechanical & Piping systems, allowing you to click once to start taking off the correct type with the given symbol label. ### Spec A Spec is a customizeable ruleset you can apply to your takeoff objects that will automatically set metadata based on target conditions. [Read more about specs here](/specs) # Generate a takeoff report Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/how-to-generate-a-report Performing takeoff is only half of the story. Once we have our takeoff objects placed, our metadata set, and our groups and [zones](/zone-tool) in order, its time to generate reports that produce actionable artifacts sourced from your takeoff data. Whether you need to create a bid proposal, material buyout, labor summary, RFQ, or any number of other documents, Canaveral helps you turn your takeoff data into documents that help you get your work done. ## Trigger the Export takeoff modal Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 25 03 PM You can generate a report for a project in two places in Canaveral. The first is on the left sidebar of the Takeoff view. There is a `Create Report` button in the bottom of the sidebar underneath the Takeoff summary section. The second place is the `Create Report` button in the project's overview page in your Dashboard. You'll find this directly to the left of the green `Open Takeoff` button. There's alot going on here, so lets go through the sections step by step. ### File name and format Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 40 35 PM Near the top of the Export Takeoff modal, edit the file name and desired format for your exported file. The file name will default to a `YYYY-MM-DD` string appended with the project name and `takeoff` at the end, but you can edit to your liking. Supported formats are CSV, Excel, and PDFs. Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 44 54 PM Next is the action buttons, `Add block` , `Add page`, and `Add filter section`. ### Blocks **Blocks** are exactly what they sound like, "building blocks" of a report. Blocks can be tables of data, raw text, headers, and more, that make up a report configuration. Clicking `Add block` opens up our available blocks panel. Choose from ductwork or piping related tables, headers or raw text blocks, or a number of other blocks useful for specific facets of Mechanical estimating. Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 50 11 PM ### Pages Clicking `Add page` adds a new page when creating a PDF report, or a new tab in a CSV or Excel sheet. Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 52 56 PM When your report configuration has more than one page, you will see the pages widget on the left of the blocks content. Click a page button to see the content for that page. Drag and drop blocks between pages for easy layout editing. ### Filter sections Filter sections let you slice takeoff data by group, zone, sheet, or system. Adding blocks to a filter section (or dragging existing blocks into them) will automatically scope the data within by that specific filter. This is useful if you want to segment your report by certain plan sheets, or only supply duct, or a specific Canaveral group you have created in your takeoff objects. There are numerous data table blocks described above. They typically look like this, with identifier columns on the left and metadata and price columns on the right. Grayed-out columns are required, but other columns are removable, and all columns can be rearranged to different orders within the table. Do your work, accurate and faster, with next-generation tools in human hands. # Parts Database Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/parts-library Use the Parts Library to define reusable part records that matches to takeoff items. ### The Basics: Your organization has its own customizable Parts database in Canaveral where you can define price, unit (each, per linear foot, etc), and target metadata. When you create takeoff objects in the Takeoff view, Parts from your Parts database will automatically resolve based on the part's metadata targeting. Part names and numbers will be displayed in report tables. ## Navigate to Parts Database 1. Open the left sidebar. 2. Select **Parts**. Direct route: `/parts` ## What a Part does A Part is a catalog entry that contains: * A **part identifier** (part number / name / manufacturer context) * **Pricing** (unit price + unit basis) * **Metadata targeting** (the takeoff metadata shape that this part should match) During takeoff, Canaveral compares each takeoff object's metadata to your Parts Library and resolves a matching part ID when metadata aligns. ## Metadata targeting and takeoff-time resolution Part resolution is metadata-driven: * Each part includes a metadata profile (for example: type, shape, dimensions, material, system, connector choices, etc.). * At takeoff-time, object metadata is normalized and compared against candidate takeoff objects. * A part matches when the part metadata is a valid subset of the object metadata. * If multiple parts match, Canaveral prioritizes the most specific match. (You can always override the resolved Part in the inspector Practical takeaway: the better your part metadata is targeted, the more reliable auto-resolution will be. ## Pricing in reports Part pricing flows into takeoff reporting: * When an object resolves to a part, its part price and price unit are used in report calculations. * Unit basis (for example each, linear, area, weight) determines how quantity is priced. * Exported takeoff reports use resolved part pricing to compute line-item and rolled-up totals. If a part is not resolved or priced, related report costs may be incomplete or zero for that item. # QuickDraw Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/quick-draw Typing dimensions is yesterday's work, use QuickDraw to speed up your takeoff. Blocks can be data tables, text, headers, and more. Configure your columns, ordering, and. When your report configuration is ready, export to CSV, Excel, or PDF formats. The first is on the left sidebar of the Takeoff view. There is a `Create Report` button in the bottom of the sidebar underneath the Takeoff summary section. The second place is the `Create Report` button in the project's overview page in your Dashboard. You'll find this directly to the left of the green `Open Takeoff` button. The file name will default to a `YYYY-MM-DD` string appended with the project name and `takeoff` at the end, but you can edit to your liking. Supported formats are CSV, Excel, and PDFs. Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 4 44 54 PM Next is the action buttons, `Add block` , `Add page`, and `Add filter section`. ### Blocks **Blocks** are exactly what they sound like, "building blocks" of a report. Blocks can be tables of data, raw text, headers, and more, that make up a report configuration. Clicking `Add block` opens up our available blocks panel. Choose from ductwork or piping related tables, headers or raw text blocks, or a number of other blocks useful for specific facets of Mechanical estimating. Click a page button to see the content for that page. Drag and drop blocks between pages for easy layout editing. ### Filter sections Filter sections let you slice takeoff data by group, zone, sheet, or system. Adding blocks to a filter section (or dragging existing blocks into them) will automatically scope the data within by that specific filter. This is useful if you want to segment your report by certain plan sheets, or only supply duct, or a specific Canaveral group you have created in your takeoff objects. There are numerous data table blocks described above. They typically look like this, with identifier columns on the left and metadata and price columns on the right. Grayed-out columns are required, but other columns are removable, and all columns can be rearranged to different orders within the table. Choose from None (raw value), whole number, 1 & 2 decimal place rounding. Selecting a rounding option will apply visually in the report builder as well as in the exported data. ## Finalize & Export When you are ready to generate your report, click the `Export` button. Screenshot 2026 05 29 At 6 58 21 PM It can also be found in the Files page as well, visible to your entire team and always connected to the project in perpetuity. # Revisions Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/revisions The Revisions feature in Canaveral allows you to upload revised PDFs, compare visually against old plans, and see a detailed list of what changed, so you never miss a detail. ## Create a Revision Navigate to your project page. A modal will appear allowing you to set the revision name as well as upload the revised document. You can also choose to remove previous pages, ignore new pages, or add new pages. ## Automatic Change Detection Once the document is uploaded and processed, you will be taken to the Takeoff page. You will see a "Revision \[N]" row near the top right of the Takeoff. Toggle the `Changes` switch to see the Revision Changes panel as well as change regions in the on the plans. Click an item in the list to move the see the exact region in the plan. Toggle the overlay switch for any given page to see an overlay of the matching page from the previous version ## Overlays Overlay any page over another using the new Page overlays section inside the Layers dropdown. Select your base page from the current version, and the overlay target from either the current or the previous version. Then, select the Blend mode: * `Difference` produces a color treatment such that "new" content from the current version appears blue, "removed" content from the previous version appears red, and "unchanged" content appears white/black (depending on light/dark mode). * `Solid` produces a solid overlay with no color change. Clicking this button automatically toggles the an overlay definition with the selected page as the base and its predecessor as the overlay. The green pill will show the current active version. In short: "If metadata matches these targets, set these other metadata values." ## Target condition logic (AND) Specs use AND-based target matching: * All target predicates in a spec must match for the spec to be considered matched. ## Add specs to takeoff workflow You can create specs from either location: * **Organization Settings -> Specs** * **Takeoff view -> Spec selector** (from the Inspector header) In the takeoff canvas, use the **Spec selector** in the Inspector header: 1. Open the **Spec** selector in the Inspector header. 2. Select a single spec to activate (or create a new one inline). 3. The selected spec stays active until you clear it or select another. ## What happens when a spec is active Once a spec is active, its effects run whenever pending object metadata matches the spec's target conditions. * This happens during your create/edit workflow as metadata updates. * If target conditions do not match, that spec does not apply. ## Select a spec to prefill metadata Selecting a spec applies that spec's target metadata as a preset for the pending object. This is useful when you want to quickly start drawing with metadata already aligned to a known spec profile. # Start takeoff Source: https://docs.canaveral.ai/start-takoff This page explains how to start working inside the takeoff workspace, with focus on: * The top toolbar tools * Picking an object type * Setting metadata in the Inspector ## Open a takeoff You can enter takeoff from: 1. **Projects** list, then open a project and click **Open Takeoff** 2. Direct URL: `/takeoff/{documentId}` ## Workspace layout The takeoff workspace is organized into: * **Top toolbar**: primary tool mode (Select, Draw, Measure, etc.) * **Canvas**: where you place and edit objects * **Inspector** (bottom panel): type, dimensions, system values, notes, scale, and more * **Pages panel**: navigate sheets in the selected takeoff document ## Toolbar tools Use these modes in the top toolbar: 1. **Select** (`1`) Edit existing objects, select one or many, and inspect metadata. 2. **Draw tool** (`2`) Create new takeoff objects using the active type and metadata. 3. **Measure** (`3`) Measure distances on the current sheet. 4. **Angle Finder** (`4`) Measure/display angles for layout and fitting decisions. 5. **SymbolSight** Opens symbol matching workflow when matches are available. Other top toolbar controls: * **Filters toggle**: show/hide filtered-object view on the canvas * **Search**: find items/pages quickly * **Status indicator** and file/help/user controls on the right ## Pick a type before drawing When you are in **Draw tool** mode, pick what you want to place first. Fast options: * `A` for **Duct** * `S` for **Pipe** Full type picker: 1. Click on the farthest-left button in the inspector (the largest one with the illustration). This opens the **Type picker.** 2. Choose from Generic types (grouped by category), or from Assemblies if any exist. 3. The selected type becomes your active drawing type. Tip: You can use `T` to quickly open the type picker while focused in the workspace. ## Set metadata in the Inspector The Inspector updates based on context: * **Create mode**: edits the pending object template (applies to what you place next) * **Select mode**: edits currently selected object(s) ### Typical metadata fields Fields are type-aware, so you only see relevant inputs. Common examples include: * Dimension fields (width/height or diameter) * Shape and system fields * Material/connector/seam options * Elevation * Scale * Notes Some fields are always present for traceability: * Group * Created/Updated metadata (when available) ### Important Inspector behavior * There is no separate save button for object edits; changes apply immediately. * If the document/project is locked, edit controls become read-only. * In Select mode with multiple objects, bulk update tools are available for shared fields. ## Metadata Guardrails For duct workflows, the Inspector header includes a standards mode dropdown: * **Standards: Optimize** (default): selects the lightest SMACNA-compliant sheet-metal gauge and adds reinforcement when needed * **Standards: Validate**: enforces SMACNA requirements attempting to retain as many valid metadata selections as possible * **Standards: Off**: disables SMACNA standards correction Use these when you want stronger consistency and fewer manual corrections. ### Duct-specific: Standards mode When the selected or pending object is a **duct type**, the **Standards** dropdown helps keep duct metadata aligned to **SMACNA standards**. * **Optimize** is the default and drives ducts toward the lightest compliant gauge, including reinforcement when the table allows a lighter reinforced branch. * **Validate** enforces SMACNA requirements given current metadata selections, correcting under-spec values upward, but otherwise attempts to retain as many valid metadata selections as possible. * **Off** skips standards correction entirely. * It is most useful when editing duct dimensions, connectors, seams, reinforcement, and related duct construction fields. * It is available while drawing new duct items and while editing existing duct objects. How to use it in practice: 1. Choose **Optimize**, **Validate**, or **Off** from the **Standards** dropdown before placing or editing ducts. 2. Set your duct dimensions and key properties as usual. 3. Review the resulting metadata in the Inspector and make final adjustments if needed. You use it to place objects, define metadata, route systems, and produce accurate downstream counts. ## Working modes 1. **Select** (`1`) Select one or many objects to move, rotate, retype, and bulk edit metadata. 2. **Draw** (`2`) Draw new objects on the sheet. 3. **Measure** (`3`) Measure lengths and point-to-point distance for reference. 4. **Angle Finder** (`4`) Read angles on plan geometry to route duct/pipe accurately. 5. **SymbolSight** Open symbol matching flows as an assisted placement path within takeoff, when applicable. Tip: Most takeoff work happens in **Draw** and **Select**, switching often between placement and correction. ## Draw takeoff objects Before drawing, pick the correct type in the Inspector, or use the Duct (A key) or Pipe (S key) shortcuts. ### Basic placement flow 1. Enter **Draw** mode. 2. Choose a type (for example Duct, Pipe, Fitting, Accessory, Equipment). 3. Set dimensions and metadata in the Inspector. 4. Click to place points, runs, or objects on the canvas. 5. Press `Esc` to end the current draw action and start a new object. ### Connected runs for duct and pipe When drawing line-based systems: * Click once to start a run * Continue clicking to add segments * Hit "End run" or escape to finish this segment * New segments inherit active type + relevant Inspector settings ### Smart behavior while drawing Depending on type and context, drawing can apply automatic inserted items: * Auto place fittings like elbows at angle transitions * Auto place connections like taps when a branch off a main trunck is detected ## Move and rotate objects Use **Select** mode for geometric edits. ### Move * Drag selected object(s) to reposition freely * Multi-select move keeps relative spacing between selected objects ### Rotate * Select an object and use the rotate handle or rotate action * Rotate around the active pivot/anchor point ## Edit one object Select any object to edit its properties in the Inspector. Edits apply immediately and update quantities/live takeoff totals. ## Bulk edit many objects When in select mode, click on the plan and drag to form a selection zone to edit multiple objects at once. 1. Select multiple compatible objects. 2. Select update option in Inspector. 3. Apply change across multiple objects (there will be a message saying how many total items are compatible). 4. Confirm canvas + quantity updates. Bulk editing is ideal for: * Setting system values across a whole branch * Updating connector/material choices at scale ## Auto branching and auto elbows (duct and pipe) Takeoff supports automatically insertable objects for duct/pipe systems. ### Auto branching When you branch from a main run, the app can detect a valid branch condition and insert branch geometry/fitting behavior automatically. Expected behavior: * Maintains continuity of the main run * Creates branch connection at the selected junction * Carries forward compatible system metadata * Reduces manual fitting placement at tee/tap conditions ### Auto elbows When changing direction in a run, the app can place elbow behavior automatically at turns. Expected behavior: * Detects directional change between consecutive segments * Inserts elbow-compatible transition at the corner * Keeps segment connectivity and measurement continuity intact * Adapts to duct/pipe type context while preserving your active metadata Tip: Draw clean point-to-point turns first; then adjust dimensions/metadata from Inspector if needed. ### Auto transition When dimensions change between one connected object or another, we insert a transition peice automatically. ### Taking off vertical items Takeoff vertical items in two ways: 1. If an item is straight up and down, open the **Type picker** in the Inspector and select "Duct vertical" or "Pipe Vertical". This allows placement of a Vertical Stack, which places a single geometry on the canvas that contains multiple child items to represent a vertical stack of objects. * We pre-fill the stack items with two 90º elbows and a fill item, but you can adjust this as needed. * Fill items fill remaining space between the starting elevation and ending elevation of the vertical stack 2. If an item has "run" in addition to "rise" and is connected to another item, change the elevation of the pending object while in `Create` mode, then click to automatically generate a vertical stack with "run" the same distance as the size of the object you just clicked. Tip: Hold the `E` key when taking off a run to activate a "Quick elevation picker". Move your mouse Screenshot 2026 03 19 At 8 06 30 PM ## Secondary toolbar reference The secondary toolbar appears while drawing and gives fast, context-aware controls. 3. **System selector** Apply the target system (for example supply/return/exhaust or pipe system). 4. **Segment continuation toggle** Continue from the last endpoint automatically when placing sequential runs. 5. **Auto branch toggle** Enable automatic branch behavior at valid connection points. 6. **Auto elbow toggle** Enable automatic elbow behavior on direction changes. 7. **Elevation field** Set placement elevation for upcoming objects. 8. **Finish/Cancel controls** Complete current draw action or cancel and reset. Because the toolbar is context-aware, some controls appear only for compatible types (especially duct and pipe). ## Recommended takeoff workflow 1. Set page scale and confirm type defaults. 2. Draw major trunks/mains first. 3. Add branches with auto branch + auto elbow enabled. 4. Switch to Select mode for move/rotate cleanup. 5. Bulk edit shared metadata by system/zone. 6. Final QA pass with Measure and Angle Finder.
